generally, there are two types of oil level sensors.

1. optical sensor. it measures the light transmittance by infrared light. due to the high deflection angle of air / oil, its very easy to determine the level. however, these sensors are extremely expensive and very unlikely to be used on bmw's

2. floating sensor. they have internal floater and floater controls a potentiometer. i believe most bmw's use this type.

forget about it, too much work for you to do.

typical conversion involves:
1. drain the oil
2. remove the oil pan
3. remove sensor and plug with M15x1.5 plug
4. drill on opposite side of the pan and install dipstick tube
5. defeat low oil level warning. usually install correct value resistor / cap
