generally, there are two types of oil level sensors.
1. optical sensor. it measures the light transmittance by infrared light. due to the high deflection angle of air / oil, its very easy to determine the level. however, these sensors are extremely expensive and very unlikely to be used on bmw's
2. floating sensor. they have internal floater and floater controls a potentiometer. i believe most bmw's use this type.
anything electrical sensors are less robust than mechanic dip stick. that why millions if not billions of bmw owners have converted to dipstick |
