Well, I hate to be the first (I think), but appears my M-DCT is toast. Major problemos. I had my 1200 mile service performed today and was really excited to get a little sideways at least once. I didn't have a chance to open it up at first because I had my kids with me, and as I was pulling into a parking lot, I switched from "D" to manual mode...engine quit and the "Transmission Failure" warning came on. Well, I restarted and all seemed fine. So, dropped the kids off and decided it was time to see the shift lights in action. I pushed the "M" buuton which put it in M-Dynamic mode, Power button on, suspension full tight and nailed it...sputter...and a little vroom, but not a whole lot. No warning light so I decided it was just a one time thing maybe. So at the next turn I cut all the computer stability systems and nailed the gas. Car just dove to the pavement then revved hard, inertia pushed my hand forward on the dive causing a down shift...so I feel the rev limiter kick in and the car just started lunging and braking uncontrollably. Subsequently, I was able to reign her in but only 3 out of the 7 gears would engage...limped to BMW service (luckily only a few blocks away) and dropped her off. They were in shock. They were certain the 1200 service was performed correctly. (Earlier I did tell the service advisor that the car seemed sluggish occasionally and he said they would be taking the governor off during the 1200 mi service. I'm like..."what governor?" No real answer from them.)
So now I am waiting for the verdict to come in tomorrow. I have the only M-DCT in town as far as I know and there are no spares here...maybe I will be in a loaner until a new tranny comes from Germany?? What would you do?
Okay here is the follow up...car is now in the shop for undetermined amount of time. Read below.
Well, mystery solved. It's not pretty and you aren't going to believe this shixt. After you read this I would appreciate a course of action from more experienced Bimmer owners. I am not a happy camper.
First, when I went to pick up my car that was "fine", "fastest BMW ever" etc. I immediately took it for a hard lap to be sure the problem was rectified. Unfortunately, it wasn't. I was able to replicate the problem in the exact manner I told them it occurred when I dropped it off. But now it has a strange humming coming from the tranny. Now I can tell you precisely what happened the first time and this time. My first post was inaccurate and was my best recollection and what I "thought" happened. Now everything makes sense since I duplicated the problem.
First thing. I didn't miss a shift or accidentally downshift, I thought I did because the tranny missed the shift, not me. I was so damn startled and in disbelief as to what could have possibly gone wrong that I blamed myself for a missed shift...but in reality, 2nd gear was GONE and the car free revved to redline when I changed from first to second, because there was no second. So I immediately switched to "D"...auto mode. This didn't help much either as gears 2,4,and 6 were history. So anyway, the first time and this time I limped to the BMW center. I didn't cut the car off this time and left the error code displayed on the iDrive screen. (Personally I think they probably thought I didn't know what I was talking about the first time since they seemed totally shocked to see "Transmission Failure" on the iDrive screen when I came right back). SO they take it to the back. They didn't tell me exactly what the error code was but something even more shocking. I am still shaking my head.
I didn't think I needed to tell them how to service the car, afterall, wasn't the official release date for M-DCT May 1st??? Anyway...THEY CHANGED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID! The M-DCT fluid is LIFETIME fluid and does not require a change! Apparently they filled it with regular manual transmission fluid and it is the wrong viscosity or something...hell, I don't know. Point is I and the service guys ran this car hard with the wrong tranny fluid in it. I am like WTF??
So, what would you do? Personally I want them to take the damn car back. It's humming now and seems slower to me. I don't know. I am beside myself now and not sure what to do.
Update 5/19
Well, here's the latest. BMW NA called and said the dealer ordered the correct fluid, no ETA on when the correct fluid will arrive. Bottom line, they are only going to swap the fluid out. The BMW NA rep said everything "should be fine" and that he could not do anything further as "each dealer is independently owned and operated". So afaik I have to drive the car with my fingers crossed every day because everything "should be fine" . I will be pushing the dealer for a 100K warranty and will let you know. So far sounds like I'm hosed but glad this thread helped at least one person avoid this disaster. I will edit/update my original post.
